When you need to promote a business of any sort, it is critical to know the area you’re trying to break in to. I note that the latest up market ladies’ magazine that I suscribe to has really opened up the back end of their fortnightly publication. It’s one of the oldest magazines on the market and fiercely proud of its independance from any other one produced today. They have a very distinctive design and are very well known for helping well bred families to find a new Nannyor other domestic servant. Circulation and subscription rate has always been healthy – no Lady of any House is going to be without this particular magazine – it is the equivalent of Wisden’s guide to Cricket! The publishers have however struggled against a tide of other magazines – the families are not necessarily passing on the view that it is critical to buy it or else you’ll be condemned forever. So other streams of revenue have been needed. They have thought long and hard about the business area they want to be seen to be covering. The older, monied sector is their chosen catchment and so advertorials on high end warden assisted retirement homes and smarter looking mobility aids feature – nestled in amongst the equally high end holidays and cruise adverts!
